In 1895, Boston philanthropist James Walker Tufts purchased 5,000 acres from Henry Page of Aberdeen for the exorbitant price of $1 per acre to develop a place for northerners to "spend the winter out of doors." Landscape designer Frederick Law
Olmsted designed a New England village and planted 226,000 trees and shrubs to beautify the area. The Holly Inn provided modern conveniences such as running water, electricity, and telephone system. In the early 1900s, the private estate covering
10 square miles had four hotels, 50 cottages, two excellent golf courses, and a 35,000 acre shooting preserve. Donald Ross of Dornoch, Scotland, arrived to design additional courses, including the famed No. 2 course and to serve as the
first golf pro. Eleven years later, Pinehurst hosted several national tournaments and was known throughout the United States. Today Pinehurst is known throughout the entire golf world.
